Anthony Boulanger has taught MArch Design Studio 16 [DS16] at the University of Westminster since 2006. He is a senior lecturer and has been lead tutor of DS16 since 2011 teaching with Stuart Piercy, Dr Guan Lee (2011-2015) and Callum Perry (2016-2021).
DS16 is run on a platform for students to experiment and invent architectural and spatial constructs initiated through in-depth investigations of material techniques and the making of physical things, created both manually and digitally. This has largely been supported by a unique relationship we’ve had with Grymsdyke Farm (http://www.grymsdykefarm.com), a research facility set up by Guan Lee in 2004. Students have enjoyed the farm, its facilities and its landscape for collaborative projects since 2011. The farm’s community of architects, artists, designers, engineers and makers is part of DS16’s culture.
Students consistently produce challenging and ambitious projects. Although much of the work stems from material research and an iterative design through making approach, the typologies, techniques, aesthetics and technologies explored in each project are determined by the specific interests of the student. Special attention is given to place, culture, community and both environmental and social sustainability.
